Is Maslow's hierarchy of needs relevant to police work? Why or why not?

The authors have incorporated leadership approaches that are widely accepted in business and public administration. Other textbooks on police management and leadership do not do this. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is one of these widely accepted approaches in both psychology and business.
Basic psychology and security needs apply to both managements and other police officers and justifies the existence of police unions. Social needs are a those that management cannot overlook. Finally, feelings of importance means that everyone needs the dignity of self respect and value related to their role in the organization. Because of the unique nature of police organizations in times of emergency, even though we all need a feeling of autonomy, the leadership needs to understand and deal with this bouncing ball. Self-actualization is hard to come by and the leadership that can provide this is terrific and rare.
