Socio-economic issues

The first part of Chapter 11 addresses a wide range of socio-economic issues which have considerable impact on the education of children and youth. Based on your reading of the text, discussions, and experiences, identify each of the sub-categories of the socio-economic challenge and offer a related result which interfered with learning. Do not disclose any information which would identify a person or school. Then identify one of the sub-categories that you believe would have the greatest impact on your teaching and explain your reasoning. What would be your role in assisting a student or group of students that you identified?

ANS: Scoring guide:

Key elements that should appear in an appropriate response:

* The first part of the assignment requires the student to identify the categories of socio-economic distress and to relate each of them to a classroom learning challenge. The inclusion of both reasonable and comprehensive responses results in maximum point credit.
* In this part of the assignment, the student must reflect on the frequency and magnitude of the challenge and provide a well-thought out rationale for selecting one socio-economic aspect over the alternatives. Full credit depends on the reasonableness of the rationale in terms of the student's major.
* The third part of the assignment provides the student with an opportunity to relate information from reading and discussing previous chapters (e.g., Chapter 2 on facilitating learning, Chapter 3 on diversity, Chapter 5 on affective approaches, and Chapter 6 on classroom management). Full credit depends on the thoroughness and sensitivity to the circumstances surrounding the students.
