Briefly explain the difference between nonprobability samples and probability samples. Then identify at least two situations where a nonprobability sample would be appropriate.
What will be an ideal response?
Unlike probability samples, nonprobability samples comprise elements within a population that do not have a known probability of being selected into the sample. Therefore, the difference refers to whether or not the elements of the population are known. For nonprobability samples, because the chance of any element being selected is unknown, we cannot be certain the selected sample actually represents our population. However, we may want to use a nonprobability sample if we do not have a population list or if we are exploring a research question that does not concern a large population.
