Discuss osmotic balance in freshwater and saltwater fishes
What will be an ideal response?
Freshwater fish live in an environment in which their bodies have a higher solute concentration than their environment. Freshwater fish do not drink water and are constantly excreting excess water by producing high volumes of dilute urine; the cells of freshwater fishes are also salt permeable. Marine fishes have a lower solute concentration than their environment. Marine fishes are constantly drinking water while excreting small volumes of highly concentrated urine.
