Describe how halophiles metabolize nutrients in environments that contain a high salt concentration.

What will be an ideal response?

Halophiles require a high salt concentration (12-15%). Their proteins have a chloride pump that uses halorhodopsin to pump chloride to the inside of the cell to prevent water loss. They are aerobic chemoheterotrophs that can carry out a form of photosynthesis using bacteriorhodopsin.
