Although there is a great deal of diversity among NRMs, they have a number of common features. First, NRMs are typically founded by a single powerful leader. Second, NRMs can spring up quickly and disappear quickly. Third, NRMs start small but can become international movements. Fourth, most NRMs are tightly organized. Fifth, NRMs are religious responses to the modern world. Sixth, NRMs are countercultural in their response to the modern world. Finally, NRMs typically have distinct patterns of gender relations.
