Compare and contrast research on psychological process theories. What are some examples of important research on these theories?

What will be an ideal response?

Research in this area includes a variety of Bobo doll experiments by Bandura in which watching violent acts on a television led children to later engage in similar types of violence in real life. Another example is Milgram’s experiment testing the nature of blind obedience. Participants were ordered to give what they thought were real electrical shocks to people in another room when they answered questions incorrectly. The shocks were false, but those being tested would begin to complain of pain, yell out in discomfort, and eventually scream that the pain was too much. In the study, 65% of experiment participants administered the experiment’s final, and most severe, 450-volt shock. Milgram concluded that they obeyed only under coercion. In general, more submission was elicited from participants when (1) the authority figure was in close proximity, (2) participants felt they could pass on responsibility to others, and (3) experiments took place under the auspices of a respected organization.
