Consider a task that has already been given an initial resource assignment; when you add a second resource, you double the units. In this situation, one of two things will happen to the Work = Duration * Units formula. Either the Work value will double or the Duration value will halve so that the equation stays balanced. In the case of Project 2010, when you add additional resource units after the initial resource assignment, the program assumes that the work will remain constant--this forces the duration to change, and is called effort-driven scheduling. Work (effort) remains constant and determines (drives) the way that the W=D*U formula will be calculated.
