Describe the third step in the direct instruction model, guided student practice. Explain ways that the teacher might effectively guide students during this time

What will be an ideal response?

Guided student practice should include the following ingredients for eliciting student response:
? In as non-evaluative atmosphere as possible
? Use of covert responses (ensuring nonthreatening environment, encouraging student engagement)
? Checking often for student understanding

Two ways to provide guided practice during direct instruction
1) Prompting including verbal prompts, gestural prompts, and physical prompts. Educators accomplish prompting through least-to-most intrusive prompting. Teachers can also check for understanding and prompt for correct responses using the full class.
2) Modeling or demonstrating to learners what the teacher wants them to do or think. Four processes that need to occur for learners to benefit are
3) attention (a person who is respected models something that has functional value to learners),
4) retention (learners remember more when demonstrations are linked to previously learned skills; include concise labels, vivid images, visual reminders; and are immediately rehearsed),
5) production (students do what the teacher demonstrated using cues or stimuli and mentally rehearsed), and
6) motivation (praise and encouragement follows performance and direction follow incorrect performances).
