What role do zooxanthellae play in the reef-building process?

What will be an ideal response?

Zooxanthellae living within coral polyps play an important role in supplying the polyp with needed energy resources in the form of glycerol. Presumably the polyp uses this energy in its metabolic processes, which result in the secretion of calcium carbonate corallite cups. Additionally, the secretion of solid calcium carbonate is aided by the lower concentrations of CO2 in the surrounding water as a result of the photosynthetic activity of the zooxanthellae. Reduced CO2 levels means a higher pH, which favors calcium carbonate deposition.
