Workplace romantic relationships are fraught with a higher and more intense level of emotion, which is one reason why some organizations do not condone romantic relationships. It could be a breach of company policy, but even if it isn’t, there might still be ramifications. Because the employees must work with each other, if the romantic relationship ends, it is common for issues to arise, such as decreased job performance, increased absenteeism, and decreased job morale. There might be rumors and gossip that spread widely and could damage reputations. An individual in the couple may be resented by other colleagues if it is perceived that there is a preferential treatment, favoritism, or job advancement as a result of the relationship. Finally, there might be claims of sexual harassment and/or a hostile work environment.
