2. Rape and sexual assault as weapons of war are first and foremost strategies to demoralize and destabilize an entire community.
3. It has been used during conflicts and war around the world in different countries, including Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Syria, Central African Republic, North Korea, Philippines, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Liberia, Colombia, Vietnam, Nigeria, and the former Yugoslavia. Rape as a weapon of war was also widespread during World War II in different parts of Europe and Asia.
4. When conflict ends, the consequences persist. Victims continue to suffer, physically and mentally, and may have lost their value with little place in society.
5. Survivors of sexual violence need a variety of medical, psychological, and legal services to help them.
