What is Herzberg’s two-factor theory, and how can today’s manager use this theory?

Herzberg basically stated that there are hygiene factors and motivator factors. Hygiene factors are essential to job satisfaction but do not motivate. Hygiene factors are very important, however, because if they are not present, or not adequate, they can, in fact, cause job dissatisfaction. In order to motivate an individual you must make certain the hygiene factors are present, and fair, and then bring in the motivators, such as recognition, advancement, and achievement. Today’s manager does not have to rely upon money to motivate (in fact salary is a hygiene factor and as such is important, but not a motivator). Managers have to look to motivator factors in order to motivate their workforce.
