Advance directives are not considered moral or acceptable to some ethnic, racial or religious groups. Sensitivity to the values of individuals in all racial, ethnic and religious groups is essential. It is possible that education about advanced directives has not been prevalent in most communities.
Asian American are less likely than White to complete the directive, possibly due to cultural taboos against death and dying may be a factor
Black older adults often rely on belief in a higher power or miracles to determine their medical care and are less likely to completed directives. Black American seemed to feel more comfortable with surrogate decision making by family without directing them.
Hispanics also complete directives less often and prefer to rely on family decision making as opposed to the assignment of a specific surrogate decision maker. An interesting contradiction among Hispanic Older Adults is that many prefer comfort care but are likely to receive more aggressive medical interventions.
