Compare and contrast the 1980 New Mexico State Prison riot and the 1971 Attica prison riot.
What will be an ideal response?
At Attica, after a few hours of chaos and destruction in which three inmates were killed byother inmates, inmate leaders were able to take command of rioting inmates and turn theevent into an organized protest about prison conditions; after that point, no other deathsoccurred until state authorities violently retook the prison, killing 29 inmates and 10 guardhostages in the process. At New Mexico, inmate leaders were unable to organize inmates or stop the inmate-on-inmate violence. Allinmates were killed by other inmates. No one was killed when state authorities retook theprison. The disorganization of the riot and the inmate-on-inmate killings, and the brutalityof many of these killings, are what distinguish the New Mexico State Prison riot.
