Discuss the impact of Justinian on the Byzantine empire.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary, but students should reflect an understanding of Justinian's rise from ignominy, his subsequent extensive reconquest of Roman territory, including Italy and in North Africa, his elaborate reign with Theodora, and the building of costly fortifications on the Slavic border, and his other enormous architectural projects in Constantinople. Students should also be able to explain the sense of ceremony and glory that Justinian brought to the Byzantine Empire.
