The prosecution must develop positive working relationships with law enforcement, especially because prosecutors rely on police to provide both the suspects and the evidence necessary to convict offenders. In return, police rely on prosecutors to get offenders off the streets. Thus, most prosecutors and police have working relationships, where they depend upon each other to reach their goals. The prosecutor can give the police many perks: legal advice, limited unnecessary court appearances, information on the disposition of the case, preparatory information for pretrial appearances, and training for both new and experienced police in securing warrants, successful interrogation, and conducting lineups. Another key courtroom actor with whom the prosecutor must work is the judge. The prosecution and defense must also work together in the plea-bargaining process, so they also must form a working relationship. Prosecutors must also develop positive relationships with victims and witnesses. While a case could be prosecuted even if the victim does not press charges, prosecutors rely on statements and evidence from victims and witnesses. Finally, the prosecutor must work with the media, especially if the prosecutor is an elected official. The media can scrutinize the behavior of prosecutors and make that information public, either to the detriment or advantage of the prosecutor.
