Karl Polanyi states that the United States is experiencing a disembodiment of market relations from society. Explain.
What will be an ideal response?
Polanyi's assertion means the disembedding of the market from society — where privatization and individual market relations trump the kind of social cohesion approached by the mid-twentieth-century development project. That is, class polarization in the United States clearly evidences the reversal of the social model of development, following three decades of neoliberalism. Ironically, while there is much discussion of the decline of the middle class in the United States, a new (global) middle class consolidates across the global South.
