Longitudinal research is very expensive, complicated, and time consuming. Cross-sectional research used by traditional theories produces the same findings about correlates of crime as the longitudinal research used by developmental and life course theories. Some have said that developmental and life course theories are overcommitted to the risk factor approach and that they are very difficult to accurately test.
