What additional laboratory tests would you anticipate for C.Q. and why?
What will be an ideal response?
Staging of the disease is based on clinical findings and CD4 cell count; CD4 cell count is the best
available marker for determining the degree of immunodeficiency and need for prophylaxis against
HIV-related infections. Viral load testing is ordered to calculate the amount of viral activity. A
complete blood count is used to identify anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and developing
infections. C.Q. would need a chemistry panel and urinalysis to evaluate for renal, liver, metabolic,
or nutritional disease. If not previously obtained, screening for other sexually transmitted infections
should be performed, including a rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test for syphilis, gonorrhea and
chlamydia testing, and hepatitis B and C serologies. A chest x-ray examination and tuberculin test
would be done. Because C.Q. is female, a pregnancy test and Pap smear are needed.
