The FBI defines arson as involving the "willful or malicious burning or attempt to burn, with or without attempt to defraud, of a dwelling house, public building, motor vehicle or aircraft, personal property of another, etc."
The most common type of arson is arson involving structures. The most costly type is arson of industrial/manufacturing structures. The majority of arson arrests involve juveniles. In addition, most arrestees are white and male. Arson is the third leading cause of residential fires and the second leading cause of residential fire deaths. It is the leading cause of deaths and injuries and accounts for the highest dollar loss in commercial fires.
Juveniles represent offenders in arson incidents at a much higher rate than in any other index offense. They are slightly more likely to be involved in arsons in cities.
