HIPAA is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. This was enacted as a direct result of technological changes in society. It provides nationals standards for electronic transmission of health information, for the use and disclosure of personally identifiable health information, and for the security of information.The regulations cover healthcare procedures such as electronic storage and transmission of client records, confidentiality, and clients’ access to healthcare records. The healthcare entity is required to inform clients of this law. The healthcare entity must also have proof that they informed clients of this law.
