Discuss how the nervous system is involved in the regulation of heart rate. What will be an ideal response?

Concepts to Consider: Both the medulla and the hypothalamus are involved. The medulla contains
cardiac centers that connect to the SA node via the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the
autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic nerves release norepinephrine, which increases heart rate.
The parasympathetic nerves release acetylcholine, which acts in the opposite way. The hypothalamus
responds to stress by stimulating release of epinephrine and norepinephrine from the adrenal glands.
These hormones increase heart rate.
