List the reasons why the relationship between language and meaning is complicated

What will be an ideal response?

The relationship between language and meaning is complicated because:
• The meaning of words is in people, not in the words themselves.
• Words have two levels of meaning: denotation and connotation.
• Meaning may vary depending on its syntactic context, or the position of a word in a sentence and
the other words around it.
• The language of any speech community will change over time. Language changes in many ways,
including the creation of new words, the abandonment of old words, changes in word meanings in
segments of society, and the influx of words from the mixing of cultures.
• As a society absorbs immigrants who speak different languages and becomes more multicultural,
the language of the dominant group gradually absorbs some words from the languages of the
immigrants.
