Define and describe the importance and use of metaphors in narrative therapy.

What will be an ideal response?

Metaphors involve illuminating one object by comparing it to another. The object does not have to be a physical object and it often refers to a psychological state. Therapists listen for clients’ use of metaphors to gain an understanding of their subjective experiences. Metaphors also provide therapists with a common language with which to communicate with clients. The therapist can also use the metaphor as an assessment device. Metaphors represent one of the most important language tools available to psychotherapists.
