What are the benefits and limitations of Naikan therapy?
What will be an ideal response?
Naikan therapy has several strengths. First, it takes the focus away from “I” and places onto “you, it, they, them, environment.” Instead of interpreting clients’ issues for them, therapists permit clients to come to their own meanings. Second, the use of meditation can be carried over for nontherapy purposes. Third, Naikan is a short-term therapy and can be used for clients who have limited time and resources for therapy. On the other hand, a major limitation of Naikan therapy is the amount of time spent in immersion. Few people may have the resources to take off work or other responsibilities for a week at a Naikan retreat.
