Violence against women where the offender is a spouse or cohabitant has been labeled as intimate partner violence, domestic violence, spouse abuse or wife battering. Women are most likely to be the victims of intimate partner violence and it generally occurs so that the man (usually) can maintain power and control. The person is power uses force to cause pain or injury. When describing the abuser: the abuser usually is a man who abuses alcohol; grew up in a household where violence was present, the man has problems with self-confidence and sense of self-worth, he has psychological issues, the marriage is troubled and there is a lack of communication, the man is suspicious and envious, he has a problem with control issues and stress, he has a lack of respect for women, and he sees violence as a viable solution to problems and issues (see page 144 in text).
