What does it mean to manage an impression online? How are Facebook profiles an example of impression management?

What will be an ideal response?

This question asks students to connect a concept to an activity many of them engage in every day (Facebook), and the consequences of their online disclosure choices.
People choose to give out information (or not) online, but when they do, they are often trying to manage an impression of themselves. That is, they choose what to tell about themselves in order to appear a certain way to others. Facebook profiles are an example of impression management. The pictures people post tell others something about them; pictures of foreign places means the person likes to travel, while photos with friends means the person enjoys spending time with others. Also, if a person wants others to think they are studious, they might have more status updates about studying or going to the library.
