Why is it important to overwinter container-grown crops, and what are three ways to protect container-grown crops from winter damage?
What will be an ideal response?
Reason for overwintering: The roots of container-grown crops are not as cold hardy as
the shoots; therefore, container-grown plants are susceptible to winter damage because
the root system is not insulated by the soil like field-grown crops.
Three ways to provide protection:
• Place pots close together and wrap them with black plastic around the outside edge.
• Add a border row of containers filled with soil but no plants to protect the pots
containing plants.
• Combine the previous two methods, using black plastic and a border row of
containers with soil only to protect plants.
