Explain how contextual factors outside the home influence pubertal timing.
What will be an ideal response?
Adolescents who live in similar contextual conditions, especially those of socioeconomic advantage, reach menarche at about the same age, despite having different genetic backgrounds. Low socioeconomic status is associated with early pubertal onset in the United States, Canada, and the UK and may account for some of the ethnic differences in pubertal timing. For example, African American and Latina girls tend to reach menarche before white girls, but are also disproportionately likely to live in low-SES homes and neighborhoods. Ethnic differences in the timing of menarche are reduced or even disappear when researchers control for the influence of socioeconomic status.
