One suggestion to help improve skills would be to recognize that others’ nonverbal messages don’t always mean the same as yours. For example, a raised eyebrow from someone could be a sign of further interest in a person or story, whereas someone else may see it as a sign of incredulity. A second suggestion would be not to place too much emphasis on fleeting nonverbal behaviors such as facial expression or vocal tone; rather, examine the entire set of nonverbal behaviors. Again, a raised eyebrow could be taken multiple ways. If paired with a shocked gasp during a story, it may be a sign of interest. If paired with a shake of the head, it could mean disbelief. Together, the signals create the meaning and watching for a combination of communicative signals helpsprevent snap judgments.
