Discuss the potential limitations of smart policing.
What will be an ideal response?
Several key issues must be considered when assessing the contributions and limitations of smart policing. First, police–researcher partnerships can be difficult to create and maintain. Police and researchers often have different priorities and interests in conducting a research study. Relationships must have some element of trust among the participants which is not automatic. Second, if a department has a research partnership to study a particular crime problem, it does not necessarily mean that its approach to policing is different than any other police department. Finally, smart policing cannot solve any crime problem by itself. Smart policing usually involves researching the effects of familiar strategies (such as hot spot patrol or problem-oriented policing) on crime problems.
