Type 1 diabetes mellitus:
• Also called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus
• Develops early in life
• Pancreas stops producing insulin
• Patients must take daily insulin injections
Type 2 diabetes mellitus:
• Also called non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus
• Develops later in life
• Pancreas produces normal to high levels of insulin, but cells fail to respond to it
• Take oral hypoglycemic agents to reduce blood sugar levels
• Do not take insulin injections (unless cannot control blood sugar otherwise)
