Children's appetites and willingness to eat are strongly influenced by the mealtime environment. Identify and briefly discuss several features that can be used to create an atmosphere that encourages children to eat.
What will be an ideal response?
Attention should be given to several factors. First, child-size comfortable chairs should be provided and tables should be of a comfortable height. If children are still in high chairs, they (chairs) should have a stable base, all parts that are washable, a support for children's feet, and safety straps to prevent falls. Eating utensils should be child-size, non-breakable, easy for children to use (reduces the risk of spills). All eating surfaces should be sanitized and everyone's hands washed. Foods should be cut into small pieces so they are easy for children to manage and reduce frustration. The room should be straightened and distractions removed. Quiet music creates a relaxing background. Adults should eat meals with the children and engage them in pleasant social conversation.
