There are four roles that the nurse plays in the nurse–client relationship. Each is very important and responds to the client's needs very differently
These roles include health promotion, a safe environment, as well as psychological and physiologic integrity.
a. What are these roles and what are the skills needed to perform them?
b. Since the beginning of nursing, the nursing profession has been identified with the role of caregiver. Do you feel the other three roles have evolved out of the caregiver role? Why or why not?
Students' answers should include the following:
a. Discuss each role and what particular skills are needed to perform each role. Each role is a little different but alike in some way. The client's needs are met with each role. Discuss how each client's needs is met with each role.
b. Nursing has grown and evolved over the years. Discussion over the roles of educator, collaborator, and delegator stemming off of the caregiver role can be discussed here. Nurses nowadays have many hats to wear. Thought as to what a nurse's job and role is in the nurse–client relationship is important for the student to think and realize.
