What is the difference in the two basic designs of gearshift linkages (external and internal)?

What will be an ideal response?

External linkages are mounted to the outside of the transmission housing. The shifter protrudes from the back of the housing into the vehicle's interior. Linkage arms or rods connect externally to levers connected to the internal shift rails of the transmission.

Internal linkages typically are connected to the transmission at the top of the unit through a shift tower, and to a transaxle at the top, rear, or side of the unit. The control end of the shifter is mounted inside the transmission, as are all of the shift controls
