Good closed-format surveys have three features, mutually exclusive, exhaustive, and balanced. Discuss these three features and an example of each

What will be an ideal response?

Mutually exclusive means that response categories do not overlap. An example of overlap might be that a respondent finds his unique answer in two different categories. Exhaustive means that each respondent has a choice. An example would be that a respondent finds his unique answer on the questionnaire, i.e. he is employed as a baker, and baker is included as a profession. Balanced means that the survey offers favorable or unfavorable choices equally. An example would be that a respondent answers a question that doesn't seem biased to one response - an unbalance question would be,

"When you vote, will you vote for John McCain or any of the other candidates?"
