How can you use the Deep Processing Model in your practice as a group leader?
What will be an ideal response?
As a group leader, the Deep Processing Model offers a framework for between-session processing. The group counselor begins by describing as objectively as possible the events and notable incidents from the group session. The group leader does not attempt to hypothesize or interpret the session in this first step, only to transpose/record. In the second step, the group leader reflects upon the session using subjective data including the group leader’s thoughts and feelings and any values or beliefs that may pertain to the session. In the third step, the research literature regarding the dilemma or group process is explored. The group leader integrates the objective and subjective data with the research literature to discover the best course of action to apply in the fourth step. The knowledge and awareness gained from processing this session using steps one through three is used to evaluate possible actions to be applied in the next session. In the final step, the leader turns to broader issues of personal and professional identity and development, best practice and ethical issues, as well as to monitor self-care and level of functioning. Action can be taken at this step to obtain additional training if needed or put additional self-care practices into place, in short, to evolve.
