This procedure checks for the presence of anatomical and physiological abnormalities. It also provides baseline information useful in assessing postnatal development. Basic checks include general appearance, pulse, respiratory rate, birth weight, length, and other measurements. Testing for phenylketonuria and congenital hypothyroidism is also performed. Infants are also tested for neurological damage and the potential for survival using the Apgar rating system, which rates heart rate, respiratory rate, muscle tone, response to stimulation, and color at one and five minutes after birth. This overall rating is predictive of how well an infant is likely to survive.
