Describe three stages of teacher development, including the focus and concerns of each stage
What will be an ideal response?
The first stage of teacher development is survival. In this stage new teachers primarily focus on classroom management, control of classroom events, and getting through each day. Pleasing both students and supervisors is important, and fatigue and anxiety are common.
Consolidation is the second stage, and during this stage teachers' confidence increases and they shift from survival to developing competence. Classroom management becomes routinized during this stage.
The third stage of teacher development is expertise/mastery. During this stage of teacher development teachers focus on student learning and development and develop effective instructional strategies. They begin to see the "big picture" in teaching and learning and education in general.
