What keeps red dwarfs from becoming giant stars?

Red dwarf interiors are highly convective, so hydrogen shell burning never creates the increase in energy needed to begin the red giant phase. Also, red dwarf stars are not massive enough to create the temperatures necessary for helium fusion.
