What are food deserts and how do they impact people?
What will be an ideal response?
Within the United States, pockets of people live without access to nutritious foods and fresh fruits and vegetables. In Detroit, 500,000 people live in such a “food desert.” They are more likely than not to die prematurely of a diet-related cause. In many of these areas people’s main source of food is the local gas station shelves. Better access to a supermarket is related to decreased obesity and better access to a convenience store is linked to increased obesity (Hesterman 2011).
