Define a pericoronal abscess

A pericoronal abscess is a localized accumulation of pus within the overlying gingival flap (operculum) surrounding the crown of a partially erupted tooth, usually the mandibular third molar. Food and debris collect under the operculum, which makes it difficult to clean. The infection may spread posteriorly into the oropharyngeal area and medially to the base of the tongue and involve the regional lymph nodes. Patients may experience difficulty in swallowing and complain of a dull ache and may demonstrate limited jaw opening (trismus).
