"Learning problems are often the result of a teacher's failure to modify instruction in order to match the characteristics of individual learners." As a future special educator, is there another perspective on this concern?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer:
Special educators need to have the skills to assess and describe the unique patterns of characteristics in individual learners with disabilities. This means being able to describe a learner in terms of their functional characteristics, and also to be able to evaluate a learning environment for the potential for success or likelihood of problems for all learners. Special educators need to become skilled collaborators and problem-solvers so that they can work effectively with other staff to design the most effective learning environments for all children. Today we know that flexibility in presentation, practice, and expression of knowledge and skills as embodied in UDL is best practice. By having multiple ways for all learners to get information, practice skills, and demonstrate what they have learned, teachers can establish learning environments in which all learners find a comfortable learning space including those with disabilities and those with special talents.
