Briefly explain the general adaptation syndrome (GAS).

The body continually strives to maintain a constant internal environment. This state of physiological balance, known as homeostasis, is disrupted during times of stress. This reaction to stressors is called the general adaptation syndrome (GAS) and is composed of three stages: alarm reaction, resistance, and exhaustion and recovery. The alarm reaction is the immediate response to a stressor (whether positive or negative). The second stage of GAS is resistance. If the stressor persists, the body continues to resist and drains its limited resources. During the third stage of GAS, the body functions at a diminished capacity. In due time, following an "adequate" recovery period, the body recuperates and is able to return to homeostasis. If chronic stress persists during the exhaustion stage, however, immune function is compromised, which can damage body systems and lead to disease, such as eating disorders, ulcers, diabetes, and migraine headaches.
