List some practical approaches and programs suggested by conflict theories.
What will be an ideal response?
Some approaches include community activities, neighborhood watches, community policing, and dispute resolution centers. Other conflict theorists favor policies and programs such as raising the minimum wage, higher taxes on the wealthy to fund education programs, single-payer health care, paid maternal and paternal leave, and policies of family support and see them as ways of improving society and reducing crime. Still others suggest challenging journalists by providing counterarguments to misleading news stories. Contemporary debates, such as efforts to decriminalize and regulate marijuana at the state level, renewed interest in white-collar crime, and the rise in the use of drug courts and other harm-reduction approaches, have parallels with critiques offered by conflict criminologists. Again, many of these critiques draw attention to the emphasis on one sort of harm to the exclusion of others.
