Explain the concept of prisonization and why it creates problems within the prison environment

Answers should define prisonization as the process by which an inmate adopts the folkways, mores, customs, and general culture of the prison. The process is handed down from prisoner to prisoner and may be transmitted between prisons. Inmates are subjected to a system of rewards and punishments that encourages them to conform to prison codes and not violate the prison normative structure. Prisonization has a negative impact on attempts to provide rehabilitation programs; it works against rehabilitation goals and impedes treatment efforts. It prevents inmates from acquiring the skills and behaviors necessary for them to adjust to free society.
