Do you think that psychological theories of crime causation are sound? Why or why not?

What will be an ideal response?

Psychological theories are appealing for some reasons, especially when one has trouble understanding the gravity of a particular individual’s crimes. For example, when a serial murderer such as Jeffrey Dahmer is apprehended and we learn that he murdered multiple victims, had sex with dead bodies, and saved victims’ heads and bones as trophies, we assume that this had to be the work of a “madman.” But serial murder is a rare event, so the broader question is whether such approaches can be applied widely to offenders. Research indicates that the causes of psychopathy are unclear, and these theories are dependent on the ability to predict future behavior based on the past, with allowance for the effects of therapeutic intervention—an inexact science, at best.
