Explain reasons for the prevalence of STIs.
What will be an ideal response?
Responses will vary; STIs have reached epidemic proportions. These diseases are rampant for a number of reasons. Some STIs have no symptoms, so victims are unaware that they are infected or that they are spreading the disease to others. People also stopped using condoms as frequently when birth control pills became available. However, birth control pills do not provide protection against STIs. Some people are becoming sexually active at earlier ages and having more than one sexual partner. The signs of STIs are not always visible and therefore you cannot always tell if the person has a disease of concern. Some STIs cannot be cured, only treated systematically. As a result, some people have and STI for life and run the risk of infecting every person they have a sexual relationship with. Many people fear the social stigma, disapproval, and condemnation that comes with identifying that they have a STI and therefore, do not seek treatment. Many victims also deny the possibility that they are infected. Finally, some people erroneously belief that STIs are only minor irritations and are unaware of the serious complications that can result including sterility and death.
