Compare and contrast Medieval cosmology with that of the sixteenth century.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. In medieval times, the Earth was seen as the center of the universe, fixed and unmoving, divinely placed, but also the center of decay and unrest. Rest was seen as the natural state, and movement needed to be explained the Moon and the fixed stars, propelled by angels, stood at the gates of heaven. In the sixteenth century, the vision of the universe was completely challenged and changed, first with the heliocentric theories of Copernicus, then with the studies of Brahe and Kepler, who postulated elliptical, not circular movements of the planets, and which culminated with Galileo's revolutionary use of the telescope to confirm Copernican theories and posit that the Earth rotated on its own axis, and that movement was the natural state of material bodies.
